A 22-year-old man was arrested on November 27, by members of the Newcastle Crime Prevention ‘A’ Group, for being in possession of Mandrax.
According to police reports, the man was caught while police members conducted a Stop-and-Search Operation at the Newcastle taxi rank.
Upon searching the suspect, they found 10 wrapped packages in his possession, which when unwrapped, revealed 76 mandrax tablets hidden in them.
The tablets amounted to an estimated street value of R3 900.
The suspect was arrested and charged accordingly and will be appearing in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court soon.
In a separate incident, three men were also arrested during an Intelligence-Driven Operation in oSizweni on November 27.
The three suspects aged between 28 and 29 years, were charged for possession of 42 Mandrax tablets, worth an estimated R500, as well as dagga worth an estimated R2 800.
All three men will be appearing in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court Soon.
What is methaqualone (Mandrax)?
According to reports, South Africa was considered the largest abuser of Mandrax throughout the world.
This was due to the fact that Mandrax mixed with dagga, remained the preferred drug of choice among South African drug abusers.
