IFP member shot dead at home

An Inkatha Freedom Party member, Zwelithini “Fuhluza” Khumalo, was shot and killed outside his home in Inanda near Durban on Monday afternoon, the party said.

This was less than a month after the IFP’s Ward 39 chairperson in KwaMashu, Mbhasobheni Biyela was killed, party spokesperson Blessed Gwala said in a statement.

“We are shocked that the killing of our leaders in that area has not stopped.

“We are often assured that the police are doing their best to stop the killings but innocent people live in fear everyday of their lives,” he said.

The IFP did not believe that the murders were “random criminality”.

“There must be much more to these killings,” said Gwala.

Gwala said Inanda had been plagued by violence and that Khumalo was the chairperson of the local policing forum.

“It is ironic that Mr Khumalo… who was committed to bringing peace and stability to his community should die in such a violent manner.”

KwaZulu-Natal police could not be immediately reached for comment.

Gwala claimed that little was done to arrest those who killed IFP leaders and members but when ANC officials were killed rewards were offered in the hope of arresting suspects.

“We call on the police to use its crime intelligence unit to unearth the motives for the killing of law-abiding citizens.”

The IFP called on its members to remain calm and co-operate with police.
It sent its condolences to Khumalo’s family and friends.
